On 24 June 2005 the international conference “New horizons of antimicrobial chemotherapy” dedicated to the memory of the Director of Institute of Antimicrobial Chemotherapy, Professor L. Stratchounski was held in Smolensk, Russia.
The conference was a success. Over 600 physicians, faculty members and microbiologists from more than 10 cities of Russia, Belarus and the Ukraine attended the meeting. The conference was opened by the Head of Smolensk State Medical Academy V. Pleshkov, who gave the lecture “History and perspectives of antimicrobial chemotherapy”, which described the input of Professor L. Stratchounski to the development of clinical pharmacology and antimicrobial chemotherapy in Russia.
Among the topics covered at the conference were questions of diagnosis, treatment and prophylaxis of community-acquired pneumonia, urinary tract infections and sexually transmitted diseases, fungal infections, the current state of new infections and antimicrobial resistance.
After the conference the inauguration ceremony of the Institute of Antimicrobial Chemotherapy was held.
Representatives of international scientific societies and institutions G. Cornaglia (Italy), President-Elect the of European Society for Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases, K. Naber (Germany), President of International Society of Chemotherapy, T. Matsumoto (Japan), President of Asia Association of UTI and sexually transmitted diseases, S. Lerner (USA), the Representative of American Society for Microbiology, A. Rodloff (Germany), Director of Medical Institute of Microbiology, P. Appelbaum (USA), Director of clinical microbiology of Hershey Center have come to participate in the ceremonial opening.
Industry representatives of such companies as “MSD”, “Lek”, “Sanofi-Aventis”, Beckton-Dickinson, bioMériuex and others have attended the inauguration events.
The official guests from Smolensk were V. Maslov, Governor of the Smolensk region, U. Sinkin, Deputy Governor of Smolensk region, A. Doronin, Head of Healthcare Department, V. Haletski, Mayor of Smolensk.
The honorary right to open the Insitute was given to V. Maslov, Governor of the Smolensk region, and V. Pleshkov, the Head of the State Medical Academy.
Everyone has expressed a belief that joint collaboration in the field of monitoring of antimicrobial resistance will lead to the mutual success of the great initiative that Prof. L. Stratchounski has originated in Russia.
